Read 2 Tim. 3:15-17.
The tendency today is to relegate Scripture to the level
of "good books." But the Bible
differs from other books.
1. It
is inspired by God (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21).
ALL Scripture is inspired, even the order of words.
2. It
has a perennial freshness. Most passages
yield as much refreshment at the thousandth reading as the first.
3. It
is never obsolete. There is not a
problem today that the Bible cannot be applied to. Text books of science must change but not the
Bible.
4. It
is inexhaustible. "If we should
live and preach for half a century or a century you would never be able to
exhaust the thing that is yours as a deposit" (G. Campbell Morgan).
5. The
Bible can make us wise unto salvation.
Have you ever heard of a man who had been saved through reading science?
or history?
ƒ The
profitability of Scripture.
w Doctrine
- teaching. The Bible is like the
ambassador who carries with him the weight of the governmental authority. It is the truth of God.
w Reproof. The Bible is the plumbline or yardstick (Amos
7:8) by which we are admonished for the sinfulness of our lives.
w Correction. This is the capacity to correct that which
the plumbline shows is wrong.
w Instruction. The Bible is a training school for the
Christian, training him in the practical issues of his life.
ƒ Our
responsibility toward God's Word.
w Search
the Scriptures (John 5:39). This needs
to be our daily habit (Acts 17:11; 2 Tim. 2:15). Search the Word diligently, regularly and
prayerfully.
w Believe
God's Word (John 5:24).
w Live
God's Word (James 1:25). Be doers of the
Word.
w Give
it out.
Scripture is the only rule of faith and practice for
the Christian.
