(#12, Dagget 1948, Imperial 1962)
Read Matt 15:21-29.
There's an old Hebrew proverb that says, "God could
not be everywhere so he made mothers."
There's a traditional American proverb that states, "The hand that
rocks the cradle rocks the world."
The point, of course, is that a mother can and does have a tremendous
impact on the quality of life for all of us.
Jesus made the name of "mother" precious in at
least a couple of ways. One was the way
he treated His own mother ... always with respect, even when on the cross. Further, like the woman in our passage, every
mother that ever came to Jesus found a welcome.
In this passage there are five characteristics of this
mother that would be well to be seen in our lives.
w She
knew and worshipped God (v22,25). The
disciples grew tired of her pleadings and sought to turn her away, but SHE KNEW
GOD. Note that 3 times she referred to
Jesus as "Lord". This
submission to Him is essential to worship.
w She
was a praying mother (v22,25). Hannah
prayed and she lived to see Samuel become a mighty prophet. Margaret Luther prayed that God would give
her son (Martin) great faith, love and courage.
Mrs. Wesley prayed, and 2 of her sons (Charles and John) became channels
of God's grace to millions. Mrs. Moody
prayed, and her son was so filled with the Spirit that he became a great
evangelist. So this woman persisted in
prayer and her prayer was answered.
w She
was a humble mother (v27). She realized
her worthlessness. God exalts the humble
and He exalted her.
w She
was a mother of faith (v28). She put her
complete trust in Christ and thus He healed her daughter.
w She
brought her daughter to Jesus. This is
the underlying truth in this mother's life.
She desired only the very best for her child, and so she brought her to
Jesus, in Whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge ... Who is the
giver and sustainer of life ... Who is victorious over the powers of darkness.
The best you can do for your children is to bring them to
Christ.
