Read Jer. 2:1-13.
Israel is a picture of the Church. Israel was betrothed to God, and loved by God
as His bride (Jer. 2:2). So believers
are married to Christ (Rom. 7:4). But
Israel had forsaken God for another (Jer. 2:5,32; 3:1) and thus God's blessing
was withheld (Jer. 3:3). Israel's
condition is summed up in Jer. 2:13.
The fountain.
w Who
is the fountain? Christ is the
fountain! (Joel 3:18; Zech. 13:1)
w The
purpose of the fountain is for the cleansing of sin and uncleanness (Zech.
13:1; Rev. 1:5).
w The
fountain is characterized as...
1. Satisfying
(we will never thirst, John 4:14).
2. Free
(Rev. 21:6; Isa. 55:1).
3. For
all ("whosoever will", Rev. 22:17).
The fountain forsaken.
How is the fountain forsaken?
w When
we cease to think of God as the chief end in life.
w When
we overlook the laws of God.
w When
we cease to cleave to the Word of God.
w When
we begin to look for the old times of bondage.
Broken cisterns.
These cisterns are man made compared with the divine
fountain. Cisterns are dependent on the
rainfall. These cisterns were broken,
incapable of holding the satisfying water.
These broken cisterns might be cisterns of pleasure, cisterns of the
reading of novels, or even the cisterns of going to church.
Have you come to the fountain of living waters? the One who is satisfying, free, and for
all? Now is the time! Come to Christ and find times of refreshing
(Acts 3:19).
Christian: are you forsaking the fountain?
