Matt. 7:15-23, Liars! Liars! Liars! (1)

Let’s take a look at a wonderful subject: LIARS!  Okay, not “wonderful” but critical.  Jesus warned His disciples, “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many.”  Satan is the “father of lies” (Jn. 8:44).  His favorite attack on the Body of Christ comes through “wolves in sheep’s clothing” (Mt. 7:15; Ac. 20:29-30; 2 Cor. 11:12-15).  So this study will be valuable.  You will notice that all these Greek words begins with “pseudo” with which we English speakers should be familiar.

pseudēs: false, lying

·       Ac 6:13: Jews set up false witnesses against Stephen

·       Rev 2:2: Ephesus: tried false apostles, found them to be liars

·       Rev 21:8: liars, and others, have a place in lake of fire

pseudomai: to lie

·       Mt 5:11: blessed when men speak evil against you falsely (i.e. don’t get hot and bothered by this but be blessed)

·       Ac 5:3-4: Satan filled Ananias heart to lie to HS; he lied to God, not man

·       Rom 9:1: Paul: I lie not; wished to be accursed for Jews (2 Cor 11:31; Gal 1:20; 1 Tim 2:7)

·       Col 3:9: lie not to ea. other seeing you put off old man w/deeds

·       Heb 6:18: impossible for God to lie

·       Jas 3:14: if you are bitter, envious, glory not & lie not against the truth

·       1 Jn.1:6: if you claim fellowship w/God, walk in dark, we lie, do not the truth

·       Rev 3:9: Philadelphia, those of Satan's synagogue say they are Jews, but lie

pseudos: a lie, falsehood

·       Jn.8:44: when Satan speaks a lie he speaks his own language

·       Rom 1:25: men exchanged truth of God for lie

·       Eph 4:25: putting away lying speak every man truth with neighbor

·       2 Th 2:9,11: antichrist works miracles, lying wonders; God will use this to delude men to believe lie

·       1 Jn.2:21: I write bec. you know truth & that no lie is in truth

·       1 Jn.2:27: HS teaching all things & is truth & is no lie

·       Rev 14:5: no guile in mouth of martyred saints

·       Rev 21:27: no one who makes a lie in heaven (22:15: they're outside)

pseusma: a lie

·       Rom. 3:7: If, as was charged, God was glorified through Paul’s lie why was he still condemned as a sinner?  (Of course, Paul did not lie about grace; cf. 3:1-8).
