Heb. 9:11-22, Create in Me a Clean Heart (1)

Purity is an essential quality of the Christ-life.  Christ gave Himself to purify us (Heb. 1:3).  Then the Apostle Paul could speaks boldly (not proudly) that he was “clean,” having a clean conscience and heart.  In other words, meditation on these passages should lead to deeper study as to how we come to experience purity on a day-to-day basis.

katharizō (verb): to make clean, cleanse, purify

·       Mt. 8:2,3ab: man says, if you're willing you can make me clean; Christ: be clean! and the man was made clean (Mk. 1:40-42; Lk. 5:12-13)

·       Mt. 10:8: the 12 given auth to cleanse those w/leprosy

·       Mt 11:5: ans to John the B: lepers are "cured" (Lk.7:22)

·       Mt 23:25-26: Pharisees clean outside of sup only; need to clean inside 1st (Lk.11:39)

·       Mk.7:19: Jesus declared all foods clean

·       Lk 4:27: of all lepers in Israel only Naaman cleansed

·       Lk.17:14,17: 10 lepers cleansed (2)

·       Ac 10:15: to Peter: don't call impure what God has made clean (Ac 11:9)

·       Ac 15:9: no distinctions, Gentiles purified by faith

·       2 Cor 7:1: lets purify selves from all that contaminates the body

·       Eph 5:26: Christ gave self to cleanse her by washing w/water thru word

·       Tit 2:14: Christ gave self to redeem, purify us for himself

·       Hb 9:14: blood of Christ to cleanse our conscience fr. dead works so we can serve God

·       Hb.9:22f: law req. all to be cleansed; so heavenly objects must be cleansed w/better sacrifice

·       Hb.10:2: if OT sacrifices worked, worshipers would have been cleansed

·       Jas 4:8: draw nigh, wash your hands, purify your hearts

·       1 Jn.1:7,9: walk in light & blood of Christ purifies; confess sin & God purifies

katharismos (masc. noun): purification

·       Mk. 1:44: leper to offer sacrifices for cleansing (Lk.5:14)

·       Lk.2:22: time of purification for Christ after birth

·       Jn.3:25: dispute over ceremonial washing between a Jew & John's disciples

·       Heb.1:3: after providing purification for sin Christ sat at right hand of God

·       2 Pet 1:9: those without character have forgotten being cleansed fr. past sins

katharotēs (fem. noun): purity (in ritual sense)

·       Hb. 9:13: those w/blood sprinkled in OT were outwardly clean
