Jeremiah 8:4-17, Liars! Liars! Liars! (2)

pseustēs: a liar

·       Jn.8:44: Satan = liar & father of lies

·       Jn.8:55: if Jesus disclaimed rel. w/Father he would be liar like Jews

·       Rom 3:4: let God be true, every man a liar

·       1 Tim 1:10: liars need law, it's made for them

·       Tit 1:12: Cretans = liars

·       1 Jn.1:10: if we say we haven's sinned we make God a liar

·       1 Jn.2:4: whosoever says "I know him" but disobeys is a liar

·       1 Jn.2:22: who is a liar but he who denies Christ

·       1 Jn.4:20: whosoever says "I love God" but hates bro = liar

·       1 Jn.5:10: whoever believes not God makes God a liar

This completes the basic “lie” terms.  What follows is what I consider to be an amazing list of compound words, two words ties together.  The first two combine “pseudo” with “logos” (to speak, especially the message of the gospel, the “whole counsel of God”) and “numos” (what you call something, kind of the “fake news” term of NT Greek).

pseudologos: to speak falsely (the difference between this and a “lie” is that it is not just lying words but lying form of speaking, perhaps using flattery or flowery language or other ways to appeal to the flesh)

·       1 Tim. 4:2: speaking lies in hypocrisy (must read v1-3 to get the gist of this)

pseudōnumos: falsely named

·       1 Tim. 6:20: Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge

This post will be a little short because I want to place the remaining terms in this list together so you get a strong picture of the various kinds of liars that confront believers.  Today’s reading is obviously not from the NT.  It is Jeremiah’s message from God concerning the peril of false teaching from false prophets.  In other words, we cannot blame being deceived on those who deceive us.  The blame is on us.  In our situation as the Body of Christ we must carefully weigh the clear statement of the Scriptures against the words of any teacher or preacher.  Meditate on Jeremiah’s words.
