Tasting Death for Every Man

(#246, Imperial, 1956, 1964)
Read Hebrews 2:9-18.

The death of Christ on the Cross stands alone as unique in history.  Men have died for country, truth, science, fame, adventure and discovery.  Mothers have sacrificed their lives to save their children; missionaries have died in heathen lands for Christ.  But the sacrifice of Christ is unique in that He suffered for the sins of the whole world.  He tasted death for every man.

v  The Cross is a Revelation.
The meaning of the cross is not some obscure mystery, something to be philosophized upon.
Ø  The cross reveals the meaning of sin.
§  It shows what God thinks of sin.  He takes it seriously.  Sin calls for an infinitely deadly remedy.  We need to realize the awfulness of sin.
§  It shows the final result of sin.  The Son separated from the Father because of sin.
Ø  The Cross reveals the love of God.
The meaning of the cross is not some obscure mystery, something to be philosophized upon.
§  Those for whom He died.
§  The suffering and shame of His death.
§  The greatness of His sacrifice.
Ø  The Cross reveals salvation.  For …
§  In the Cross we find the one perfect covering for sin, the blood of Christ (1 John 1:7).
§  In the cross we are reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:19).
§  In the Cross we are redeemed (Titus 2:14).

v  The Challenge of the Cross.
Ø  There is a challenge to the unsaved, to accept it as your only means of salvation.
Ø  There is a challenge to the saved.
§  To a life of victory over sin, realizing it was sin that put Christ to death.
§  To share in Christ’s sufferings for men, bearing His cross.

The Cross of Christ should have the central place in the ministry of the Word.
