Titus 2:1-10, Live a life that is “fitting”!

Here is a brief but profound study.

prepo: be fitting, be seemly or suitable

·       Mat 3:15  Jesus' baptism is proper to fulfill all righteousness.

·       1 Cor 11:13  Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?

·       Eph 5:3  sexual immorality, any kind of impurity, greed, improper for God's holy people.

·       1 Tim 2:10  good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

·       Titus 2:1  You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.

·       Heb 2:10  fitting that God should make author of salvation perfect through suffering.

·       Heb 7:26  Such a high priest meets our need--holy, blameless, pure, set apart, exalted.

What an o what important truth for our generation where, as in the time of the judges, people tend to do what is right in their own eyes.  Here we see that there are aspects of our lives that are enjoined upon us, not by command but because they are “fitting” for us.  Jesus set the example.  It was not “commanded” that He be baptized as He confessed His sins as did the people (Mt. 3:6).  He did not have sins of His own of which to repent (3:1-2).  What He did was to identify with those who were prepared to receive Him.  The righteous testified as to their expectation of the coming Messiah.  So Jesus made it clear that He was one with them.  He did was was “fitting” for His mission to come in the likeness of man and for man!

It I make a profession of faith in Christ, there are certain things that will be seen in my life, not because of some “law” but because it fits those who are God’s holy people and who teach Biblical doctrine.  In the two passages where Paul speaks of what is fitting for believing women, you might try to make these things as fitting in Paul’s culture but not ours.  But what you must do is ask, “how can women show submission and holiness in our culture?”  Paul’s traditions (the head covering as well as the good works) fit his setting.

It was fitting that God would bring His Son to perfection/completion/spiritual adulthood through suffering.  This is always the path of perfection for mankind.  A high priest must be appointed from the people for whom He stands before God.  Thus Jesus “meets our need” (is fitting for us): proven (made perfect through suffering) and sinless (blameless, holy, pure, set apart and exalted.)
