The one, sometimes translated perseverance, is hupomone. The other, translated patience, is makrothumia. After listing the first family of uses we will (in the next post) give the “scholars” idea of the difference between the two.
hupomone (noun): patience, perseverance
· Lk.8:15: good seed bears fruit with patience
· Lk.21:19: by your patience possess your souls
· Rom. 2:7: eternal life for those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for immortality
· Rom.5:3-4: tribulation produces patience and patience produces character
· Rom.8:25: we wait w/perseverance for our hope
· Rm 15:4-5: through the patience & comfort of the OT we have hope. May the God of patience & comfort grant you to be like-minded. (The OT Scriptures show us illustrations of those who persevered. It is God’s way of encouraging us. It is a key to the unity of a body of believers; when we see perseverance in the OT not only to we grow but we have greater tolerance of other believers. These verses conclude what started in Rom. 14:1: Receive one who is weak in the faith, not to disputes over doubtful things.)
· 2 Cor. 1:6: our afflictions help comfort others to endure the same sufferings
· 2Cor.6:4: patience was one things about Paul that commended his apostleship
· 2 Cor.12:12: Paul ministered w/perseverance
· Col.1:11: God strengthens us for joyful patience, longsuffering (makrothomia)
· I Th.1:3: work of faith, labor of love, patience of hope (3 cardinal virtues)
· 2 Th.1:4: Paul boasted of patience & faith of Thess., who were persecuted
· I Tim.6:11: pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness
· 2Tim.3:10: Paul exemplified … longsuffering (makrothumia) ,,, perseverance
· Tit.2:2: patience is one of the virtues for older men
· Hb.10:36: we need endurance so after doing God’s will we receive reward
· Hb.12:1: run the race with endurance
· Jas.1:3-4: testing produces patience, patience brings us to maturity
· Jas.5:11: Job's perseverance is an example for us
· 2Pet.1:6: add to self-control perseverance and to perseverance godliness
· Rev.1:9: John our companion in tribulation, kingdom & patience of Christ
· Rev.2:2-3: Jesus knew the deeds, toil & patience of the Ephesian Church; indeed, they had persevered (bastazo, of carrying a burden) & been patient
· Rev.3:10: bec. they kept command to persevere they were kept from trial
· Rev.13:10: this is the patience & faith of the saints
· Rev.14:12: patience of the saints: those who keep commands and faith
