Judges 3:1-6, Trials and Temptations (3)

The above is a diagram I picked up initially from a Bible professor at Biola back in the late 60's.  I have found it useful in talking about any kind of trial or temptation.  Below is a list of important "testing" situation in the OT along with the Hebrew terms that can be studied if you wish.  "TWOT" stands for "Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament."

OT illustrations: God tests for righteousness

·       Gen 22:1: God tests Abe (5254)

·       Job 23:10: when he has tested me I will come forth...

·       Jud3:1-2: Lord left nations to test Israel (only to teach them warfare)

·       1Chr 24:17: God tests the heart, is pleased w/integrity (Pr 17:3; Jer 11:20)

·       Ps 26:2: prayer for God to test, try, examine heart/mind (139:23)

·       Ps 66:10: God testing of Israel kept them fr. slipping (v8-12)

·       Isa 48:10f: God tests Israel w/afflictions to refine them, bring him glory)

·       Basic rule: don't test God (Dt 6:16; Ps 78:18; 106:14) except Mal 3:10,15.

Hebrew words:

1.    Strong 974 (TWOT 230) bahan: examine to determine essential qualities, esp. integrity

2.    St 6884 (TWOT 1972) sarap: to smelt, refine (Ps 25:4)

3.    St 5254 (TWOT 1373) nasa:put to test, tempt (but not entice to sin)
