There
is a debate in our country about judges, as to whether or not they are strict constitutionalists. Do they make decisions based on the
constitution of the United
States or do they view it as a growing document open to private interpretation.
Peter
tells us that Scripture does not in any way derive from the private
interpretations of the human authors but is the sure word of God (2 Peter
1:19-21). This “Psalm of the Word”
speaks to us of God’s judgment according to His definite, unchanging word.
In
the opening verses God, the Judge of all mankind, enters the courtroom and
calls His saints to stand before Him (v1-6).
God
first judges His own people (v7-15). His
concern is with their worship. Though He
had commanded the sacrificial system in the Law of Moses God’s judgment is
concerned with the hearts of His people.
Do they come with thanksgiving? Do they fulfill their commitment to Him? Do they turn to Him in their trouble?
God
then judges the wicked among His people (v16-21). Though they have heard God’s word they have
not obeyed it. Through thievery,
adultery, evil speaking and slander they have shown they have no right to
declare God’s word or claim its promises.
Though God has been patient with them they deceive themselves if they
think that He will not judge them.
Finally
there is a call to all who stand before God (v22-23). There is a solemn warning to those who forget
God and a wonderful promise to those who walk right.
These
words are for us today. Jesus, near the
end of His earthly ministry, expressed the same truth (John 12:48-50). His word will be the standard of judgment for
all. Those who reject Him will be
judged. Those who obey in faith will
have everlasting life.
The
Scripture lays out God’s will, His statutes.
He is and will be a strict
Biblicist, if you will. You can know
now the standard of judgment. As in
Psalm 50, so in our judgment, God will be concerned with our hearts. Have we worshiped Him in truth? Or has our evil conduct shown the disregard
we have had for Him and His word?
Come
to the light of God’s word, that your life might be exposed now to His judgment. Do not reject it’s strong words of
admonition; it will be for your good when you stand in the judgment.
