Remember Lot's Wife

(#230, Yermo, 1944; Imperial, 1957)
Read Gen. 19:14-28; Luke 17:32.

"Remember Lot's wife."  This is one of the sermons in a sentence that Jesus spoke.  These words bring a wealth of pictures to our minds.  We think of Sodom, a wild, wicked city.  Not even 10 people could be found who loved God.  And we think of Lot.  He selfishly pitched his tent toward Sodom, and now we see him in Sodom, his testimony lost ("He seemed as one who mocked.")  And yet, it is not Sodom or Lot but Lot's wife Jesus warns of.  Why?

ƒ    Remember her privileges.
w   She had been united by marriage to the great patriarch, even as we have been "married" to Christ.
w   She was favored by a company of celestial visitors.
w   She was warned by God.  This is truly a blessing, that God warns us.  I'm reminded of the visitor to Scotland who was going to take a coastal road that was only safe at low tides.  He was warned to change his route, but the warning went unheeded and he lost his life.

ƒ    Remember the circumstances of her transgression.
    1.  Inordinate worldly attachment.  Sodom is a type of the world; she was so bound up in Sodom she couldn't break away.
    2.  She looked backward.  She did not go back but just looked back.  It's looking that leads to doing.  The looking indicates the heart, though the actions are different.
    3.  Her disobedience and unbelief.  First she lingered (v15). Then she broke God's command, disbelieving His warning not to look back.

ƒ    Remember her punishment.
w   It was sudden and unexpected, but with plenty of warning.
w   By it we are cautioned...
    1.  To beware earthly entanglements.
    2.  To beware of questioning God's commands.
    3.  To beware of delays.
Thank God for His warnings; but do not delay in giving heed to them.
