Today’s post is for your meditative enjoyment. It’s an opportunity to focus on our Lord Jesus Christ, “the Branch of the LORD.” We will record the passages and then make only brief comments. Each reference will include the context, which you will find a joy to read along with the specific verse that contains the name.
Isa. 4:2-6: In that day the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious;
And the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and appealing
For those of Israel who have escaped.
The context describes the point in history
when “all Israel shall be saved” (Rom. 11:28).
All who remain in Zion and Jerusalem will be called holy. The beauty and glory of the Branch will
benefit believing Israel.
And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
This title of the Christ comes from His connection
to David, son of Jesse. Verse 2
describes the “7-fold Spirit” of Rev. 1:4.
Jer. 23:1-5-8:
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,
“That I will
raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall
reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in
the earth.
The LORD’s answer to the wicked shepherds of
Israel in Jeremiah’s day will be His Shepherd, the Good Shepherd, the Branch! Think about your Shepherd.
Jer. 33:14-15-18:
‘In those days and at that time
I will cause to
grow up to David
A Branch of
righteousness;
He shall execute judgment and righteousness
in the earth.
Both Jeremiah passages call Jesus the “Branch
of righteousness.” Both also give Him
the name, “The LORD Our Righteousness.” Think
about that! Notice that the Branch is the continuation of David’s throne and
the ministry of the priests.
Zech. 3:6-8-10:
‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest,
You and your
companions who sit before you,
For they are a
wondrous sign;
For behold, I am bringing forth My Servant
the BRANCH.
The context here is the ministry of the High
Priest. It is tied to the One who is “My
Servant the BRANCH.”
Zech. 6:9-12-15:
Then speak to
him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, saying:
“Behold, the Man
whose name is the BRANCH!
From His place He
shall branch out,
And He shall build the temple of the Lord;
Here He is "the Man whose name is the BRANCH." The connection between the King and Priest is in bold display in this passage. The BRANCH will build the temple. The BRANCH of the LORD, Jesus the Christ, our Lord! What a marvelous God we have, worthy of glory and praise.
