katapausis: causing to cease, putting to rest; rest, repose
· Acts 7:49: Lord asks, "Where will my resting place be? (the temple)
· Heb.3:11,18: to disobedient, unbelieving God said they would never enter his rest (Ps.95:7-11; Hb.4:5)
· Heb.4:1,3,10,11: promise of rest still stands--don't fall short! Believers (aorist, participle) do enter (categorical, not are entering, etc.) that rest; those who enter God's rest do rest from work as God did; so let us make every effort to enter that rest.
katapauo: to cause to cease, restrain
· Acts 14:18: Paul, Barnabas barely stopping crowd from sacrificing to them
· Heb.4:4,8,10: 7th day God rested; if Joshua gave them final rest God wouldn't have spoken of another day; those in God's rest "rest" from their labor
In the previous post, the prefix “ana” indicates raising someone up in the sense of refreshing them. In these terms, “kata” speaks more of calming down. The frequent use in Hebrews involves …
sabbatismos: a Sabbath-keeping, Sabbath rest
· Heb.4:9: there remains a Sabbath-rest for the people of God (Vine: full fruition yet future but we enter now; involves an indissoluble relation with God.)
And here are three other “single-use” related words …
sunanapauomai: to lie down, rest with
· Rom. 15:32: Paul wanted to go to Rome & be rested with them
anaphuxis: a refreshing
· Acts 3:19: kingdom referred to as "time of refreshing"
anaphuxo: to make cool, refresh
· 2 Tim. 1:16: Paul often refreshed by Onesipherus
These add to the thought that the Body of Christ should be a setting where weary Christians can find rest and be refreshed. Is that how it works in your local church? The fallen world is a tiring place. It is more taxing than was the Garden of Eden, to be sure (Gen. 3). Life is more laborious. Do you see that God understands this, and knows our need for rest and refreshing? Not only in Jesus’ Church, but in His coming kingdom, there are plans for rest.
