Heb. 1:1-3, God Has Spoken to Us

Heb. 1:1-3 is a compound, complex sentence.  Let’s begin with a diagram.

This sentence describes the character and work of Christ that is the foundation to this marvelous letter.  Here are a few observations.

·       Literally, in these last days God has spoken to us “by Son.”  God did not send His comrade, friend, associate, partner or best angel.  God Himself came. We know this because God can only beget a Son who is of the same nature.

·       The “Mystery of God” is that God has made the Son to be the heir of all things.  Psalm 2 speaks of this (vs.6-9) and this is the goal of history.

·       The Son is the Creator; all things were made through Him (Col. 1:16).

·       As “the brightness of glory,” Christ is the brightest we will ever see of God.  When God came to dwell with men (e.g. at Mt. Sinai and at the temple of Solomon), He displayed His glory.  As amazing as those events were, they are nothing compared to what we see in the Son.

·       That’s because the Son is “the express image of His person,” which means He is the perfect representation of all that God is, the entirety of His nature.

·       The Son not only made the universe; He sustains or upholds the universe.  All things continue because of the Son.

·       What has the Son done?  He has purged our sins, cleansing us through the blood of His cross.  And then He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty, or literally, the Greatness, on high.  He is there to this day, waiting for the Father to tell Him it is time to return to earth and claim His inheritance.

Meditate on this.  God has spoken to us in the most powerful way, by His Son!
