LOVE DOES NOT E
N V Y
1) Definition:
a) A
strong human emotion that leads to action.
Can be used in a good sense (God is a jealous God; we are to be jealous
for good works, Titus 2:14. See also 2 Cor. 7:7,11; 9:2; 11:2.) or in an evil
sense (as in this study). (Kittle)
b) Any
wrong feeling excited in view of the god of others. (Charles Hodge)
c) "The
ear is never undervaluing itself because it is not the eye. The ear is rejoicing in the brilliance of the
eye." (G. Campbell Morgan)
d) "Love
is not displeased at the success of others." (Leon Morris)
e) "It
does not begrudge the greater privileges and gifts of others, or seek out gain
for itself." (Alan Redpath)
f) To
be zealous against a person; to be jealous or envious. (Albert Barnes)
2) Underlying
Principles:
a) God
exalts and humbles whomever He will.
b) God
is the giver of every good and perfect gift.
3) Illustrations:
a) Sibling
rivalry:
(1) Cain
and Abel: Gen. 4:1-12.
(2) Joseph
and his brothers: Acts 7:9; Gen 37:3-4,8,11-36.
(3) Prodigal
and brother: Luke 15:25-32.
b) King
David: 1 Sam 18:1-16; 20.
c) Disciples
of Christ: Mark 10:35-45.
d) Enemies
of Christ: Acts 5:17; 13:45; 17:5.
4) Biblical
principles:
a) That
envy/jealousy is contrary to healthy relationships should be clear. But just in case, from the following passages
what difficulties in relationship are tied to envy/jealousy? What one problem is mentioned in every
passage?
i) Rom.
13:13
ii) 1
Cor 3:3
iii) 2
Cor 12:20
iv) Gal
5:20
v) James
3:14,16
5) In
James 4:1-3, how does envy cause trouble in relationships? What must be
"put off" (sins to be repented of) and what must be "put
on" so that our love is not filled with envy?
6) Application:
a) Memorize
Titus 2:14.
b) Is
prayer for the people in your life part of your regular schedule of
activities? Do you pray for their
success and prosperity?
c) Be
filled with the Spirit. That is, immerse
yourself in the person of Christ through your fellowship with God. Yield yourself to Him. In this way you become conformed to the image
of Christ.
