2 Peter 3:1-4a, Where is the promise of His coming?

Peter had dealt with the error of those who doubted coming judgement because there was such a delay in that judgment (2:4-11).  He now deals with those who doubt the coming of Christ because there was such a delay.  This is interesting given Peter wrote in the 60s AD and there were already people tired of waiting.  How will it be as this age comes to a close?

Thus Peter is reminding them of things they should already know, things spoken before by the holy prophets (Old Testament) and now things commanded by the apostles of Christ (New Testament).  With that in mind the gist of today’s post is to remind us all of some of the many “promises of His coming”.  We encourage you to take time to read and meditate on the following passages.  You will find, among many other things, that the Bible speaks often and with great boldness about a time, yet future, when Jesus comes to earth.  To doubt His return is to reject the Bible.

·        Job 17:23-29: Yearning for the coming of Christ.

·        Isa. 61:1-3 (Luke 4:15-21): The necessity for His coming.

·        Zechariah 14:1-4: The historicity of His coming.

·        Matthew 24:29-31: The majesty and power of His coming.

·        John 14:1-3: The hope of His coming.

·        Acts 1:9-11: The ministry of those who wait for His coming.

·        Romans 11:26-27 (Isaiah 59:20-21): The deliverance of those who await His coming.

·        2 Thessalonians 1:3-10: The rest and retribution that is brought by His coming.

·        2 Timothy 4:8: The love we are to have for His coming.

·        Titus 2:11-14: The motivation, challenge, inspiration to Christ-likeness provided by the promise of His coming.

·        Revelation 19:11-16: The moment and description of His coming.
